Adopt a Word

Own an exclusive piece of the English Language from just £20

‘Antimacassar’ for the house proud?
Brobdingnagian’ for the word lover?
Serendipity’ for the fortunate?

For the first time ever I CAN, the children’s communication charity, have teamed up with Collins Dictionary to offer word lovers the opportunity to ‘own’ a little bit of the English Language. Adoptions start at £20 a word and every penny of it goes to charity.

If you go to www.adoptaword.com you can buy ‘gold’ for your girlfriend, ‘chocolate’ for your colleague or just a ‘treat’ for yourself. The word is yours to look after for a whole year, to punctuate and place in sentences as you like.

www.adoptaword.com provides a quick and easy online source of inspiration. Search by categories; for him, for her or for children, or type in your favorite sounding word to see if it’s available.  As well as the novelty of owning a bit of the English Language (all adoptions are exclusive), you will also receive a gift pack containing an official certificate, ‘after care’ booklet and bookmark. And you can get merchandise like t-shirts and mugs with your adopted word printed onto.

And it’s all for a great cause!!

By adopting a word you are supporting I CAN and helping the one in ten children who struggle to use words to express their needs, make friends and learn.

    Your £20 could:
  • pay for an hour of a speech and language therapists time
  • go towards specialist training for a teacher to identify, support and include children with communication difficulties
  • provide parents with practical training and advice for their child’s speech, language and communication development

I CAN is the children’s communication charity.
